PROF NICOLA WAGNER APPOINTED AS DIRECTOR: DST-NRF CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE (COE) FOR INTEGRATED MINERAL AND ENERGY RESOURCE ANALYSIS (CIMERA) FROM 1ST JANUARY 2019.

Prof Debra Meyer, Executive Dean, Faculty of Science, University of Johannesburg, Prof Saurabh Sinha, DVC: Research and Internationalisation, UJ, and Prof Zeblon Vilakazi, DVC: Research and Postgraduate Affairs, University of the Witwatersrand, have made a joint announcement about the appointment of Prof Nicola Wagner as the Director of DST-NRF CIMERA from the 1st January 2019. 

Prof Debra Meyer, Executive Dean, Faculty of Science, University of Johannesburg, Prof Saurabh Sinha, DVC: Research and Internationalisation, UJ, and Prof Zeblon Vilakazi, DVC: Research and Postgraduate Affairs, University of the Witwatersrand, have made a joint announcement about the appointment of Prof Nicola Wagner as the Director of DST-NRF CIMERA from the 1st January 2019. 

In coordination with the National Research Foundation (NRF) and all relevant processes, it is our pleasure to announce a leadership transition for the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Integrated Mineral and Energy Resource Analysis (CIMERA). Prof Nic Beukes would be stepping down from the position at the end of 2018. The due processes pertaining to succession planning of a CoE Director were followed and approved by senior management at UJ, the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), who are Co-Hosts of DST-NRF CIMERA, and the NRF prior to the recommendation being made.

Prof Nicola Wagner will commence duties from January 2019. She is an internationally recognised specialist in coal and organic carbon petrography with very close links to the fossil fuel industry in southern Africa.  She has a full-time appointment as Associate Professor in the Department of Geology at UJ, a Visiting Associate Professor appointment in the School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering at Wits, and holds a PhD (Civil and Environmental Engineering) from Wits. Prior to joining UJ in 2014, Prof Wagner held the positions of Senior Research Officer, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in the School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering (2006-2014) at Wits. 

She led the coal and environmental research groups at SASOL between 2000 and 2006. She received a C1 rating from the NRF in 2015, is a Council Member of the Fossil Fuel Foundation since 1998, a member of several professional organizations and serves on the editorial boards of three journals specializing in coal science and technology. She is the author of 41 peer-reviewed articles, 55 International and 65 National conference contributions. She is also the lead author of a book published in 2018 entitled “Southern African Coals and Carbon” (a full Curriculum Vitae of Prof Wagner is available at www.cimera.co.za).

Prof Wagner has been an active member of the research team of DST-NRF CIMERA since its inception in 2014, and currently supervises research of a dozen postgraduate students on research topics including coal geology in Africa, organic petrography and shale gas, trace and rare earth minerals in coal, and carbon capture and storage.
