Dr. Hervé Wabo is a Research Associate at CIMERA, based in the UJ Paleomagnetic Laboratory. He was previously a Post-Doctoral fellow at UJ (with NRF Freestanding Grant in 2014 and 2015), after a PhD entitled <Paleomagnetism of post-Transvaal sill complexes, selected dykes and the Uitkomst Complex - Relation to the Bushveld Complex> from the same institution (2013), and an MSc from the University of Yaoundé in Cameroon (2004). Prior to his arrival at UJ, Dr. Wabo worked in industry from 2003 to 2009 as Field Geologist involved in various geophysical mapping and exploration projects in Central Africa (Cameroon, Gabon, Tchad, Nigeria, etc…).
His scientific interest at CIMERA mainly focuses on the characterization of the ancient geomagnetic field recorded by Archaean to Precambrian-aged rock units (e.g. Barberton BIFs, Bushveld marginal sills, Uitkomst Complex, mafic dyke swarms). This information, combined to rock-magnetic data, geochemistry and radiometric ages is used to constrain the position of the Kaapvaal Craton within ancient supercontinents (Rodinia, Columbia, etc.), with implications for paleo environmental reconstitutions and mineral deposit targeting.
