Prof Nic Beukes wins the prestigious National Science and Technology Forum Lifetime Achievement Award

Prof Nic Beukes, the Director of DSY-NRF CIMERA, received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award of the NSTF from the Honourable Minister of Science and Technology, Mrs Naledi Pandor, at a Gala Dinner on the 29th June, 2017.  For more information, click here.

New classroom built for the Matjiesrivier NGK Primary School as a contribution from the DST-NRF CIMERA KARIN Project

The DST-NRF CIMERA KARIN Project involved the drilling of a research hole in the Tankwa Karoo near the town of Ceres in the Western Cape Province in 2015. The drilling of Hole KZF-01 was conducted on the farm Zandfontein and the farming community nearby was fully consulted before work begun.

Launch of new DST-NRF CIMERA-supported LA-MC-ICPMS Laboratory at UJ

On the 1st June 2016, the laser ablation multi-collector ICPMS laboratory at the University of Johannesburg was officially opened, in the presence of representatives of various universities, government institutions and companies. The NRF-NEP-funded Nu Plasma MC-ICPMS with ASI Resonetics ArF Excimer laser is already proving to be a powerful tool for a range of analyses.

KARIN PROJECT MAKING GOOD PROGRESS

The Karoo Research Initiative (KARIN) aims to explore the southern Karoo Basin through the extraction of deep drill cores.

The Karoo refers to the sedimentary successions that were deposited on the ancient supercontinent of Gondwanaland some 300 to 170 million years ago in the area now represented by the southern part of the African continent. These Karoo-­‐aged basins contain all of the important coal deposits of southern Africa as well as thick successions of black carbon-­‐ bearing shales that are a potential source of shale gas.

DST-NRF CIMERA OFFICE WARMING FUNCTION 3 AUGUST 2015

DST-NRF CIMERA held an informal office warming function at 11 am on Monday 3 August 2013. The offices are on the 3rd floor of C1 Lab at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). The refurbishment of the former Department of Geology lecture rooms was financed by UJ as part of their support of our Centre of Excellence (CoE), the first to be hosted at UJ. DST-NRF CIMERA greatly appreciates this support and will carry out our mandate as a prestigious CoE for the benefit of the country.

Prof Nic Beukes, Director, and Prof Judith Kinnaird, Co-Director, of DST-NRF CIMERA warmly welcomed all to the new offices, and wished that with the co-operation and excellent output from all our collaborators, our CoE will have a successful future. They thanked all the stakeholders who had participated in the establishment of our CoE, and toasted to a future of impactful research to be conducted under the DST-NRF umbrella.
