Bruce Cairncross is Professor of Geology and Head of Department at the University of Johannesburg. He holds an MSc from the University of Natal and a PhD from the University of the Witwatersrand, both of which focused on sedimentological and stratigraphical aspects of the Karoo Basin coal deposits. Before joining academia, he worked for Rand Mines Ltd as a coal geologist. He has published extensively on the sedimentology, stratigraphy and associated coal of the Karoo-type (Permo-Carboniferous) successions, primarily in the main Karoo Basin and has been previously involved in coalbed methane research. He has supervised several Masters and Doctoral students working on coal-related topics. He also has an interest in southern African minerals and gemstones and geoheritage, in general. Many outputs from this line of research have also been achieved including eight books on the subject and dozens of public lectures. The aims of this latter research are to create greater public awareness in southern Africa’s rich mineralogical heritage.
