Mining Indaba and Young Leaders Programme 2024

DSI-NRF CIMERA students attended the Mining Indaba 2024 Young Leaders Programme, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in Cape Town on 8 February 2024.

The Young Leaders Programme provided insightful sessions with seasoned industry speakers and academics. Mike Teke, Founder and CEO of Seriti Resources, as wellas its new renewable energy arm, Seriti Green, shared his inspiring life journey and experiences in the mining industry. “This is your Life: A Personal Journey of Leadership in Mining”.

Andrés Blanco, CEO of Xcalibur Smart Mapping; Chris Green, Managing Partner Corporate & Finance, Hogan Lovells Johannesburg; Mosima Poopedi, Applied Geology Honours Student from the University of the Western Cape; and Phakamani Lisa Chindeka, International Political Risk and Engagement, Anglo American,engaged in a thought-provoking conversation about the opportunities and risks associated with mining exploration in Africa, as well as the policies, procedures, technology, and laws that are required to establish new mines in the region.

Professor Glen Nwaila (Director, Wits Mining Institute), Andrew Van Zyl (Director and Principal Consultant, SRK Consulting), Nishen Hariparsad (The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and GM Technology & Marketing, Omnia), and Sibongile (Bongi) Ntsoelengoe (Executive Cluster Manager, Mining) spoke about new knowledge and new mining: the research and technology thatN Mdrives innovation.

Grace Akinyi, founder of Women in Mining Kenya, shared her journey as a winner on the innovation and research battlefield.


Chane de Jager, Divisional Geologist, Impala Bafokeng (WIMSA Nominated Young Professional); Reta Jo Lewis, President and CEO, Export-Import Bank of the United States; Vuma Ngcobo, Director of Stakeholder and Government Relations (Renewables), Anglo American; Mzila Mthenjane, South Africa CEO of the Minerals Council; and Rudi Dicks, Director of the South African Presidency Office of Project Management, discussed whether Africa is heading towards maximizing the value of its mineral resources and what more should or could be done; and who does it actually benefit?

And finally, Julie Courtnage ED, Mandela Mining Precinct, PusoThahane, Associate Partner, McKinsey and Company, Prof Francis W. Petersen, Vice-Chancellor and Principal,University of the Free State and Zandile Cindi, Goldfield’s Director of Strategy and Business Development continued the programme with a discussion on mining companies, universities, and adaptation of individuals. What should students and young professionals consider when learning, developing new skills, and adapting to the rapidly reinventing mining industry?
