Environmental Geology
Focus Area 8

Focus on reclamation of old mine dumps and minimizing the effects of mining on the environment.

Industrialization and modernization of counties around the world have had significant impacts on the natural environment, most of it detrimental. Degradation and pollution of the environment are especially evident in the mining industry, and most countries have stringent laws in place to mitigate against potential disasters occurring because of such mining activities. Thus, continuing studies on issues such as acid mine drainage and carbon dioxide storage are particularly relevant nowadays. In addition, groundwater is a very real and important natural resource in South Africa and should be carefully managed. The current drought in the Western Cape has emphasized the importance of water, in general, in South Africa, and groundwater, in particular.
