CIMERA Encourages South African Participation in the 38th International Geological Congress (IGC 2028)
DSTI-NRF CIMERA is pleased to support the 38th International Geological Congress (IGC 2028), which will be hosted in Calgary, Canada, from 12–20 August 2028.
Held every four years since 1878, the International Geological Congress is regarded as one of the most significant global gatherings of the geoscience community. Under the theme Geosciences for Humanity, IGC 2028 will bring together thousands of researchers, students, industry leaders, policymakers, and professional societies from around the world to engage on critical issues shaping the future of our planet and society.
The congress will feature a broad scientific programme covering topics such as climate change, water resources, critical minerals, sustainable energy transition, geohazards, geoscience education, artificial intelligence, geosciences in Africa, and many other disciplines across the Earth sciences.
As a supporting organisation, CIMERA is assisting in sharing information about IGC 2028 with the South African geoscience community and encouraging broad participation from researchers, postgraduate students, postdoctoral fellows, academics, industry professionals, and stakeholders.
The organising committee has opened calls for:
- Scientific session proposals
- Workshop and short course proposals
- Field excursion proposals
Abstract submissions are expected to open in June 2027.
We encourage South Africans across the geoscience sector to engage with this opportunity, contribute to the scientific programme, and showcase the depth and impact of geoscience research taking place across the continent.
