The DST-NRF CIMERA KARIN Project involved the drilling of a research hole in the Tankwa Karoo near the town of Ceres in the Western Cape Province in 2015. The drilling of Hole KZF-01 was conducted on the farm Zandfontein and the farming community nearby was fully consulted before work begun. 

HEADLINE: New classroom built for the Matjiesrivier NGK Primary School as a contribution from the DST-NRF CIMERA KARIN Project

The DST-NRF CIMERA KARIN Project involved the drilling of a research hole in the Tankwa Karoo near the town of Ceres in the Western Cape Province in 2015. The drilling of Hole KZF-01 was conducted on the farm Zandfontein and the farming community nearby was fully consulted before work begun.

The Matjiesrivier NGK Primary School in the area approached Professor Nic Beukes, who was supervising the drilling, with a request to sponsor a new classroom for Grade R learners. This need was urgent as the existing school did not enough space to accommodate Grade R learners. Professor Beukes agreed to the request and the project was implemented with the assistance of the University of Johannesburg Outreach staff.

The classroom was completed in early 2017, under the on-site management of Mrs Marianne Geldenhuys of the school, and is now fully functional. Mrs Geldenhuys sent a letter of appreciation to UJ that can be read here
