Registration Open for the DSTI-NRF CIMERA Earth Observation Masterclass
The DSTI-NRF CIMERA, in collaboration with the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF), is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the Earth Observation Masterclass, taking place from 5 – 9 October 2026 at the University of Johannesburg.
This five-day masterclass will explore current developments in remote sensing for mining and mineral exploration, from drill core scanning to drone surveys and satellite remote sensing. Through a combination of expert-led lectures and practical sessions, participants will gain hands-on experience with Earth Observation technologies and their applications in the geosciences.
The programme includes:
- Introduction to Earth Observation (EO)
- Applications of EO in Geology
- Multi- and Hyperspectral Imaging
- Photogrammetry and 3D Surface Models
- Introduction to Machine Learning Tools
- Magnetics for EO
- Practical hands-on sessions
The masterclass will be presented by internationally recognised experts from the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg:
