DSTI-NRF CIMERA recently hosted the Earth Observation Masterclass in collaboration with the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) at the University of Johannesburg. The five-day programme introduced participants to a range of Earth Observation and remote sensing technologies used in mineral exploration and geological research. Participants explored topics including hyperspectral imaging, photogrammetry, machine learning, magnetics, and satellite-based Earth Observation applications through a combination of expert-led lectures and practical sessions.

A highlight of the final day was a networking session sponsored by Exosens, which included a live technology demonstration, providing attendees with an opportunity to engage with advanced Earth Observation technologies and connect with fellow students, researchers and industry professionals.

The masterclass provided a valuable platform for skills development, knowledge exchange and collaboration, while showcasing the growing role of Earth Observation technologies in the geosciences.
