Dr Ben Hayes

Ben is a Senior Lecturer in Economic Geology at the University of the Witwatersrand. His research focuses on the origin of magmatic Ni-Cu-PGE sulphide deposits and Large Igneous Provinces across southern Africa. Ben’s research integrates field and textural observations with geochronology and geochemistry. He is currently involved in projects on the Bushveld Complex (the origin of its platiniferous reefs as well as chromite and vanadium ore deposits), the Umkondo Large Igneous Province (mantle sources and crustal evolution), and the Kunene Complex (the petrogenesis of Proterozoic anorthosites and Ni-S potential).

Ben holds an MSci from Durham University (UK) and a PhD from Cardiff University (UK) in which he worked in collaboration with the Geological Survey of Canada. Prior to his current position, Ben held Postdoctoral Fellow and Research Associate positions at both Wits and the University of Johannesburg. He is a member of the Society of Economic Geologists, Geological Society of South Africa, and is a registered professional natural scientist with SACNASP.
